A Clinical Review of Pyloric Stenosis due to Peptic Ulcer

Abstract
The result of surgical treatment for 56 cases of pyloric stenosis due to peptic ulcers during the 10-year period from April 1958 to March 1968- at the Dept.. of General Surgery, Pusan National University Hospital was reviewed.
The peak age incidence of these cases was between 40-49 years with 41 / of patient fallings inside this range. Males were more frequently affected in this group of pyloric stenosis cases. The sex ratio being 3.3 1 (M:F).
Duodenal ulcers were found to be more frequent cause of pyloric stenosis than gastric ulcers, with a ratio of 4.6 : 1.
The duration of the clinical symptoms in the authors cases was from 5 years to 10 years; this is shorter than that described in other reports.
Vomiting was the most prominent symptom in pyloric stenosis patients.
The most commonly used operation for pyloric stenosis in the authors series was subtotal gastrectomy which removes the antral phase of acid secretion and adds a further excision of acid secreting cells. Early post-operative complications occurred in 10.7% : and the operative mortality rate was 3.5%
